Hi! Welcome to the "About"
section of my site. If you've found yourself here then you're
more than likely interested in what I do, and maybe even interested
in hiring me. I've set out this section like a Q&A which
will hopefully answer any questions you have and give you as
much information as possible about me.Who Are You?
|
- What is it that you do?
|
| I work primarily as Computer
Graphics Artist, mainly working in 3D, although I do a lot of
2D based artwork as well. I have worked in a range of computer
graphics based industries such as digital multimedia, online multimedia,
product engineering visualisation, architectural visualisation,
virtual reality, and more recently the games industry. |
| - How did you get into 3D graphics? |
| I studied Product Design Visualisation
at University and got to use lots of high-end 3D CAD software. This
is where I found my love for 3D modelling. Coming from a Fine Art
background when I was younger, I was never over-keen on the more
technical engineering side of the course, and found I enjoyed digitally
sculpting great looking 3D visualisations. As part of my year out
in industry I worked in a company called PERA who had just invested
in a Silicon Graphics VR suite, so I spent the best part of the
year learning the ropes with polygonal based modelling and applying
them to create cutting-edge (at the time!) real-time architectural
and product based fly-throughs and visualisations. After finishing
my degree I jumped straight into a multimedia company and followed
that up by working in a games company for 3 years. I then decided
to go freelance, working on 7 games projects alone across a span
of 2 years. |
| - Who do you work for now? |
| In
2005 I set up my own company called Fraction Studios Limited, which
is essentially there to act as a base to secure larger projects
of which I am able to hire in other freelance artists to work with
me. To date, (Dec 2007) Fraction Studios has completed work on 9
major games developments, and a number of multimedia based animation
and visualisation work. The website for Fraction is www.fractionstudios.com. |
| - So do you still freelance? |
| No
not anymore. I am now full-time working on, and securing, new projects
for Fraction Studios. |
| - Why did you revamp your site? |
| Had
you seen the old one recently? Very tatty and old....think I originally
created that in the 90's! Needed something a little simpler - so
hopefully this site does just that. |
| - You don't seem to display
any work as such - just screenshots. Is there any way of seeing
your portfolio? |
| I
had to make a decision on whether to have an online portfolio. I
decided to not show the actual work as I have worked on a number
of high profile projects for various companies and showing meshes
and screenshots within 3D software would have meant gaining lots
of permissions. If you want to see my full portfolio then drop me
an email and i'll be happy to supply it for you. |
| - Whatever happened to your
tutorials section from the old site? |
| I
decided to do away with my tutorials section. However you can still
access some by clicking this link. |
| - Is it true you write for
magazines? |
| Yes
it is! I have been writing primarily for 3D
World magazine as their resident Rhino 3D expert since 2000.
I have written reviews, and tutorials for Rhino and Maya. I have
also written some key game building tutorials for both PC Format,
and PC Gamer. |
| - Any other things you do apart
from freelance graphics art? |
| I
have spent the last couple of years lecturing part-time on a University
Computer Animation course. This has been a new outlet for me, and
one which I have really enjoyed. I do not intend to currently work
full-time as a lecturer, as i'm far too busy with other work, however
it is definately something that I would consider continuing in the
future. |
| - Do you have a showreel I
can download? |
| Not
really, no. I don't have a lot of time to put one together, however
I do have one I put together a few years ago after working for Razorworks.
It can be downloaded by right clicking and saving from here.
Please note it is in DivX format - and remember to crank up the
volume when watching! |
